Best time to visit Paris in 2026

Best months to visit Paris | Seasonal activities & local tips

When should you visit Paris?

The famous city of light and the capital of France, Paris is a culture-packed, vibrant city that attracts tourists year-round. Whether you’re visiting in the winter or the heart of summer, there will always be something to do and see. For example: December has the festive Christmas markets and delicious sweet treats, while July has long, sunny days and is perfect for outside activities. And then there’s November – rainy, but supposedly the cheapest time of year! So, the question is: out of all the months of the year, when is the best time to visit Paris?

1. Shoulder season in Paris – best time to visit!

As you might already know, the high season for visiting Paris is the summer: June, July, and August. That’s when school’s out, the weather’s sunny, and there are countless outdoor activities. The shoulder season includes the months around the high season – April, May, September, and early October. During this time of year, temperatures are lower but pleasant, school’s in session so there’s less crowds, and there’s still plenty of sights to see. Let us walk you through the benefits!

Sunny days and cool temperatures

The shoulder season typically comes with ideal sightseeing temperatures. April and May weather usually ranges from 10-15 °C (low to mid-50s and 60s °F) with lows 7 °C (45 °F) and highs near 19°C (67 °F). September is very similar to May, just slightly warmer, with highs up to 21 °C (70 °F). Plus, these pleasant cool temperatures are usually accompanied by sunny days, providing the perfect weather conditions. Just come prepared if traveling in May; out of the entire shoulder season, it’s the most rainy month. All in all, the mild weather makes for great sightseeing – you just need a breathable top with a light jacket!

Fewer crowds and shorter lines

Throughout the entire shoulder season, children are in school. And if school is in session, that means fewer family vacations and fewer crowds! Instead of lining up in the morning to enter the Louvre, making dinner reservations 5 days in advance, and bumping elbows on the Eiffel Tower, you can explore Paris at your leisure. Enjoy the city in a relaxed, comfortable environment. Take your time, relax at cafes and enter attractions whenever you like. In fact, that’s another reason this is the best time to visit Paris. Fewer crowds means less planning ahead, and a more spontaneous, easy-going vacation!

Affordable hotel and flight tickets

November, January, and February are the cheapest months to visit Paris, but they’re also the coldest and rainiest. If saving money is your top priority, choose these months. Late March, early April, and early October also offer great deals. You can find round-trip flights from the U.S. for around $300.  Hotels are usually cheaper during that time, too, ranging from approximately $100 to $200 per night.

Paris Marathon, Roland-Garros, Fashion Week, and more!

Depending on your interests, there are plenty of exciting events during Paris’s shoulder season! For example, the Paris Marathon is in April. Even if you’re not a runner, it’s fun to cheer on the athletes. If you’re more culturally inclined, you can go to the Festival of Books which also takes place in April. It is a great, relaxing way to spend an afternoon! May is when Roland-Garros takes place, one of the four most important tennis tournaments. It’s your chance to watch world-class athletes in action! In addition, “Nuit européenne des musées” or the “European Night of Museums” also happens in May. This event is an opportunity to visit Parisian museums in an enchanting evening atmosphere, completely free of charge!

Finally, September is when “Journées du Patrimoine or Heritage Days” takes place. It’s also worth mentioning that Paris Fashion Week happens in early March and late September. If you’re interested in that industry, it’s another reason to pick this month to visit Paris!

Sightseeing without crowds

Whatever Parisian sights interest you, the shoulder season is the best time to see them! For starters, there’ll be less crowds at super-popular attractions like the Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Élysées, and the Louvre, so you’ll enjoy the city attractions in relative peace and quiet. Furthermore, whether you visit in spring or fall, you’ll enjoy either blooming flowers or richly-colored leaves. It’s the perfect opportunity to explore outdoors; e.g. the Jardin du Luxembourg, the Palais-Royal gardens, or even the Cimetière du Père-Lachaise.

The shoulder season’s cool temperatures also make it the best time to visit Paris via boat cruise! There’s no better feeling than cruising down the Seine, feeling the cool breeze on your face, and seeing all the beautiful buildings, lights, and nature that line the riverbank. Plus, even if you run across rainy days, there are plenty of indoor venues. The Louvre is practically an all-day event, and you could spend eons seeing both the Musee d’Orsay’s and the Pompidou’s art exhibitions. Don’t forget Notre Dame or Sacré-Cœur either!

2. Avoid visiting Paris in the high season!

As mentioned earlier, the peak tourist season in Paris is during the summer months of June, July, and August. And although the days are long and sunny, these factors often simply translate into too hot and too crowded!

30 °C (90s °F) temperatures

During summer in Paris, temperatures are estimated to reach 25 °C (78 °F). And while 25 °C isn’t too hot, you’re still spending all day on your feet (and walking in the sun). That kind of activity coupled with strong heat will likely wear you out much more quickly. Furthermore, there’s always the possibility that the temperatures will surge above 30 ° C (90 °F)! In such heat, it’s difficult to relax and enjoy your visit, since you’re simply sweating too much and are too preoccupied with the oppressive heat. Plus, some AirBnBs won’t have air conditioning, especially older units. Make sure you double-check beforehand!

Crowds, crowds, and more crowds!

June, July, and August are when children are free from school. Coupled with sunny, long days, many families consider the summer the best time to visit Paris, and then proceed to do exactly that. The result? Huge crowds and long lines. In fact, during peak season, visitors might have to wait up to 3 hours to enter the Eiffel Tower. And while you can overcome long lines via skip-the-line tickets, that typically requires more expensive tickets. As for the crowds, the only real solution is to show up early in the morning and hope for the best. Neither ‘fix’ is ideal, and both require either increased spending or alarm clocks, something you’d normally hope to keep to a minimum during your vacation.

3. August – worst month to visit Paris

If there’s one month in Paris to avoid, it’s August. Parisians typically go on their main vacation (their “grands vacances”) then, and Paris effectively empties of locals as they escape to mountain homes and seaside towns. While city attractions will of course be functioning, you’ll run into plenty of closed restaurants, cafes, souvenir shops, and other independent storefronts. It might be a little harder to dine and shop, and with so many Parisians gone, visiting tourists will stand out more prominently than ever. Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing, but you definitely won’t experience the same immersion into the city you’d notice if you were visiting in, say, April.

No matter when you visit, our Seine River cruises offer the best way to see Paris’ iconic sights. From the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame to the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay, you can enjoy stunning views from comfortable seats. Sit back, relax, and glide through the heart of the City of Light!
